Co-Instruction Strategies

Co-Instruction is a classroom environment where two or more teachers actively engage in teaching the lesson.

There are seven co-instruction strategies.

The co-instruction strategies should be selected (during co-planning) to fit the purpose of a lesson, individual students or group needs, and the needs of the co-teachers.

The strategies are not meant to be a progression or hierarchy.

Having co-planned the lesson, co-teachers...

  • work together to implement instruction

  • each have a specific and active role in the lesson

  • confer with one another as needed throughout instruction

  • share responsibility for implementation of the lesson and assessment of student learning during and after the lesson

Co-Instruction builds confidence and skills without throwing interns into the deep end and hoping they can swim.

Co-Instruction allows the intern to focus on one or two aspects of teaching during a lesson as they are learning to teach.
