  • develop instructional tasks

  • select/develop instructional tools

  • design an assessment plan

  • agree on instructional goals

  • establish a timeline for instruction

  • analyze assessment of student learning

There are six co-planning strategies. The co-planning strategies are designed to parallel the co-instruction strategies.

The co-planning strategies can be selected to fit the needs of a given lesson and the needs of the co-teachers*.

*They can be implemented using the following progression to help build co-planning skills among co-teachers but a specific order is not required. As interns move throughout the internship you may return to certain strategies to work on new skills.

During co-planning the following questions will help guide co-teachers to make strong instructional decisions for the co-taught lesson:

  • What do students need to learn?

  • How might we assess student learning?

  • In what tasks will students engage to ensure learning happens?

  • Which co-instruction strategy might help meet these objectives?

Co-Planning makes the decision-making process of instructional planning transparent.

Co-Planning also strengthens differentiation and decision-making skills to meet individual student needs, while developing collaborative practices.
